Add Existing Unallocated Space to Partition without Data Loss

Question: C: drive running out of space

"My OS is Windows Server 2008 R2, C: drive is nearly full, but there is a lot of free space on the secondary partition (D: drive), I want to extend C: (system, boot, primary) partition by taking unused space from D drive, however, Windows doesn't allow me to do this. It can only let me shrink D drive to generate unallocated space but I can't add to system partition, and I don't want to delete the partition D:, either. How can I add unallocated space to existing C drive without deleting?"

Why Disk Management doesn't work

Searching internet you could find such kind of question easily. This problem is caused by the flaw of built-in Disk Management. The extend volume feature only works with contiguous unallocated space behind system partition, e.g. [system partition/C drive][unallocated space]. However, you can't get this by shrinking the secondary partition, because it's missing an important feature - move partition. Under Disk Management, the only way is to delete the secondary partition (D: drive) and make it become unallocated space. In this case you have to backup D: partition and restore data, it is time-consuming and risky. Therefore, the safest and the most effective method is to use partition magic software which is more reliable and powerful than Disk Management snap-in, such as Norton Partition Magic and Partition Magic Server alternative - Partition Assistant Server Edition.

How to add unallocated/free space without deleting partition

Partition Magic is considered as the earliest partition software and generally accepted, unfortunately, it can not work in Windows 7/Vista and Windows Server OS. By contrast, Partition Magic Server Software - Partition Assistant Server Edition is more ideal and perfect. Here we take Windows 2008 for example to show how to add existing unallocated space to C: drive without deleting or formatting hard drive partitions (Tips: If there is no existing unallocated space on the disk, please refer to how to allocate free space).

Step1. Launch Partition Assistant Server. All the disk partitions and unallocated space are shown as below:

Partition Assistant Server

Step2. Select C: drive. Then, right click on it and select "Merge Partition" (you can also right click on unallocated space).

Allocate Free Space

Step3. In the pop-up window, choose C: drive and unallocated space that you want to add in the partition layout.

Add Unallocated Space to C Drive

Step4. Click "OK". You can preview the unallocated space has been added into C: drive. To save changes, please click "Apply" on the toolbar.

Click Apply

With several clicks, you can add more unallocated space to existing partition without deleting or formatting. In addition to this, Partiton Assistant Server Edition also helps you resize/move partition, merge adjacent partitions, split partition, copy partition and copy disk, etc. Now free download Partition Magic Server Software and have a try before you buy full version.

Tips: For Enterprise users, Unlimited Edition provides unlimited usage within one company to save money, namely, you can install it on multiple machines in your company to maximize business productivity whilst minimizing the total cost of management.
