Fix Low Disk Space Alert in Windows Server 2000/2003/2008 with Partition Magic Software

In many SBS forums, lots of Server administrators have the same question that system partition C drive running out of space and they continually receive low disk space alerts. Sometimes you could just disable this alert or change its threshold by using the "Change Alert Notifications" task in the Server Management Monitoring and Reporting taskpad, but it is not so simple when the problem is on the C drive. If so, it will cause performance problems and prevent your computer from installing any applications or updating Windows.

Therefore, I will introduce how to fix low disk space alert in Windows SBS 2003 in the following paragraphs.

What causes "Low Disk Space" warning in Windows?

Microsoft Windows created "Low Disk Space" warning to alert computer users when their hard drive is running low on available disk space. Usually, there is a pop-up window says: "You are running out of disk space on Local Disk [drive]. To free space on this drive by deleting old or unnecessary files, click here."

Low Disk Space

The 200 MB threshold is the line that Windows has drawn for optimal performance. Once you fall below this threshold your system automatically takes actions to maintain minimum performance capabilities.

In the final analysis, the reason why there is low disk space warning is that there is not enough free space in C drive. So the best solution is to add more space to C drive.

How to add more space to C drive?

  1. Follow the "click here…". Run Disk Cleanup to free up space on C drive by searching for files that you can safely delete. You can choose to delete some or all of the files. Usually, this method doesn't do much good.

  2. Remove or Migrate programs. Delete the seldom used applications or move them from C drive to another partition. It may take much time to do the job and may cause data loss.

  3. Move space from other partition to C drive. The way allows you to extend C drive by merging unallocated space without losing data. The benefits are simple, fast and safety.
