Problem Windows Server users encounter
There is always a common issue troubling server system administrators, the system partition - C drive is almost full or running out of space, but the secondary D partition has plenty free space available. Then, how to move free space from D partition to C drive in this case?
According to my experience, generally, there are two ways for solving the problem. One use a 3rd-party partition utility, AOMEI Partition Assistant Server, which provides "Allocate Free Space" to allow you to mvoe free space. Another way is using Windows built-in Diskpart or Disk Management Snap-in, but some limitations will likely hamper your operations.
The limitations of Diskpart and Disk Management snap-in
To Windows 2000/2003 Server, there are no "extend and shrink" features in built-in Disk Management. Worst yet, Diskpart.exe can not support extension of boot and system partition. Although Windows Server 2008's Disk Management snap-in has extend volume and shrink volume, you will find the Extend Volume greyed out, even if there is unallocated space on the disk. Because "Extend Volume" feature only works with contiguous unallocated space at the right of the partition you want to extend. Is there any other program available?
Partition Magic Server Software helps move free space safely
