How to Resize GPT Disk Partition without Losing Data?

Question: We have a Server. 2x36GB hard drives are configured as RAID 1 that contains a single 36GB C: drive for Windows operating system. And 3x2TB hard drives are configured as RAID 5 that is pre-initialized 4TB GPT disk with several partitions for different usages. Now some partitions in RAID 5 array are not used in an effective way, so we would like to resize partition for the most effective distribution. We know some kinds of software can solve the problem on 2TB MBR disk, but we don’t know which one can support very large GPT disk.

Answer: The latest Partition Magic Software fully supports GPT disk up to 4TB.

A brief introduction to GPT disk

GPT, acronym for GUID Partition Table, was introduced as part of the Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI) initiative. GPT provides a more flexible mechanism for partitioning disks than the older Master Boot Record (MBR) partitioning scheme that was commonly used.

GPT disk Vs. MBR disk

Compare with MBR disk, a GPT disk can support larger than 2 TB volumes where MBR can not. Besides, GPT disks also support up to 128 partitions rather than the 4 primary partitions limited to MBR. Also, GPT keeps a backup of the partition table at the end of the disk.

How to resize partition on GPT disk?

As Partition Magic alternative, Partition Assistant is easy-to-use and all-in-one GPT disk partition manager software that supports all types of GPT partitioning style, such as physical disk, RAID virtual disk, VMware virtual disk, etc. It provides basic and advanced features to make your GPT disk partition space effectively used.

Note: Partition Assistant can not support GPT disk that contains system or boot partition.

This is an example to shrink E partition and extend D partition on GPT disk, please follow the steps below:

Step1: Choose and free download the right version based on your operating system and needs. Then, install and launch it.

Step2: Right click on the partition (here is E) and select "Resize Partition".

In the pop-up window, drag the left slider bar rightwards to shrink E partition.

Step3: Click "OK", there will be a block of contiguous unallocated space behind D partition. Then, select D partition and drag the right slider bar rightwards to merge unallocated space as shown below.

Step4: Now you can preview the extended D partition and decreased E partition. To save the changes, please click "Apply" on the toolbar.

As ALL-IN-ONE and complete GPT hard disk partition management solution, Partition Magic Server software also allows you to merge two partitions, split partition, allocate free space, copy partition, copy disk, create partition, format partition, delete partition, convert FAT to NTFS on MBR and GPT disk and much more… Free download partition magic trial version and have a test.
